Co-Directed by Fernadina Chan and Adriane Brayton, Not Eye, Us is an immersive dance-theatre work exploring the intersection of gaze and power through a multi-layered connection to Michael Alfano’s sculpture ‘Cubed’. Through manipulation of the sculpture’s nine moveable pieces, each pigmented with a different skin tone, Not Eye, Us examines individual diversity within a united community; propelling the audience and performers on an interactive journey.

Featuring four diverse female dancers, the performance is approximately 50 minutes in length and set to recorded music. For the opening section of the work, audience members move freely throughout the space in a gallery-like setting; they are then seated at the 20 minute mark (seating for the entire performance can be accommodated for those who need it). This new cross-disciplinary dance challenges audiences to consider the impact of external perception on race and gender, while empowering them to interact with, touch, and take ownership of the work.

Due to the immersive nature of the work, there will be no late seating.

The creation of this work was made possible in part by The Boston Dancemakers Residency (2022-2023), produced through a partnership between Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) and Boston Dance Alliance (BDA). The initial exploration and creation of movement was made possible by an AiR residency at SOM Art Space funded by Somerville Arts Council in 2022.

Continuum Dance Project (CDP) is a Boston based dance company focused on creating site-specific work, cross-disciplinary collaboration and reflecting the backgrounds of our collaborating artists. Founded in 2013 by Fernadina Chan, CDP choreographers/co-directors Adriane Brayton and Fernadina Chan work collaboratively with their dancers. Most recently the company was selected to create a site-responsive work to Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood for the Momentum Greenway Dance Program, presented by Amazon. In 2022 CDP received The Boston Dancemakers Residency, made possible with support from the Aliad Fund at The Boston Foundation, and an AiR Residency at Somerville Arts Council’s ArtAssembled. CDP is a 2022 Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship Finalist in Choreography, and received a 2020 Live Arts Boston grant from the Boston Foundation. Continuum Dance Project pushes the boundaries of audience interaction and traditional vantage points, by presenting work in unconventional spaces.

Continuum Dance Project has performed throughout Boston and New England. Performance highlights include The Eustice Estate, Pao Arts Center, Boston Center for the Arts, The Dance Complex, The Museum of Science Boston, Outside the Box Festival, Dance for World Community, Southern Vermont Dance Festival, and the ArtBeat Festival. CDP has self produced two formal concerts 5 iterations of its whimsical series “Pairing: An Interactive Food and Dance Event at various locations.
