What can students expect from this class?

The classes will offer three levels: Adv Beginner Choreography, Technique (all levels) and Intermediate Choreography. Students will work on body and footwork, technique as well as interpretation of specific rhythms. Classes will be taught by master teacher and performer, Concha Jareño, who is considered one of the most important dancers of this generation.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Flamenco is a Spanish musical genre that developed in the southern region of Andalusia, Spain. Its main facets are singing, guitar playing, and dancing, each of which also have its own traditions and norms. In November 2010, UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

 

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

Sabrina Avilés has been performing flamenco and Spanish classical dance for over 30 years, training in Madrid and Seville, Spain. She has performed extensively throughout New England in major venues such as the Cutler Majestic Theatre in Boston, and the Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, MA with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra.

In 2009, Sabrina founded “Flamenco Dance Project,” a company dedicated to promoting and teaching the art of flamenco while showcasing the talents of dancers and musicians here in the United States. In 2011, the troupe performed at Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Series and drew one of the largest audiences in the history of the series
