Pre-Dance Complex: The Joy of Movement
In 1973 Kenneth Estridge leases the building from the Odd Fellows. Alison Binder, in partnership with Ken Estridge, moves Dance Free on Fridays to Central Square, and creates the Joy of Movement, a fitness center. The Joy of Movement goes on to become a health and fitness center chain in both Massachusetts and New York.
In 1977 Kenn Estridge officially buys the building from the Odd Fellows.
On January 25th of 1986 The Dancer’s Center opens, this organization is co-located within Joy of Movement and offers advance level dance technique classes. Special recognition is made to artists Jeremy Alliger, founder of Dance Umbrella, and Adrienne Hawkins, Artistic Director of Impulse Dance Company for over 25 years.
In March of 1991, Kenn Estridge’s assets are frozen, and The Joy of Movement’s doors are padlocked shut without warning to members. Kenn Estridge later files for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy.
