Technique Class & Int/Adv Repertory Choreography with Sabrina Avilés “Flamenco Dance Project”
1-2pm: Technique
2-3pm: Int/Adv Repertory

The technique class is structured as a series of focused drills, rigorously training all elements of flamenco dance—arms, footwork, posture, and turns—while connecting them to the art form’s various rhythms. Please note: this class is open to all levels except beginners.

The Intermediate/Advanced Repertory class is a choreography-based course centered on tangos. The pace will be fast, as students will learn the full piece over the course of eight classes. The process will culminate in a performance with live musicians on June 13.

Students enrolled in Repertory are strongly encouraged to take the technique class beforehand.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Flamenco is an art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of southern Spain, developed within the gitano subculture of the region of Andalusia.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

I have been dancing and performing flamenco professionally for over 30 years. Throughout my career, I was also a member of three local flamenco companies: Ramon de los Reyes Spanish Dance Theatre, Omayra Amaya Flamenco Sin Limites and my own company, Flamenco Dance Project. I have studied both here and in Spain, and continue my studies (to keep current with the dance) at various workshops both here and abroad.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

it fills my soul, and I want to impart that to my students. I make it a point of really studying the different elements of the dance, especially el cante (singing) to teach my students the importance of the relationship between the dance and the singing.
