What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
Broadway- style is steeped in the traditions of American Jazz dance–which emerged from African American movement and musical practices while drawing from ballet, tap, vaudeville, modern and various cultural traditions. The form brings together many lineages into conversation through musicality, character, storytelling and expressive movement.
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
Ramone Owens’s relationship with musical theater dance began through his formal training at Boston Conservatory, where he earned a B.F.A. in Musical Theater. He deepened that training through more than a decade as a professional performer, including *Motown the Musical* on Broadway and national tour and the original Broadway company of *Beetlejuice*. Now a director, choreographer, and Assistant Professor of Theater at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, he approaches the form from both artistic and pedagogical perspectives. His teaching draws upon his experience in the classroom, rehearsal room, and on the Broadway stage to help dancers integrate technique, musicality, character, and storytelling.
