What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
African and Caribbean dance traditions are rooted in the diverse cultures of countries such as Madagascar, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, and Cuba, among many others. The movement and rhythms represented in ’Froca Fitness draw inspiration from forms such as Malagasy dance, Sabar, Azonto, Kizomba, Coupé-Décalé, Ndombolo, Afrobeats, Dancehall, Soca, Kompa, and traditional Haitian rhythms, reflecting generations of African and Caribbean cultural expression, resilience, and exchange. ’Froca Fitness honors this legacy by bringing these influences into a contemporary, high-energy dance-fitness experience that celebrates the diversity and global impact of Afro-diasporic movement and music.
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
Sylver Rochelin is a professional dancer, educator, and the founder and creator of ’Froca Fitness, an African and Caribbean dance-fitness practice rooted in his Malagasy heritage and broader African and Caribbean movement traditions. His training and performance experience span African, Caribbean, urban, contemporary, and modern dance forms, with a strong emphasis on rhythm, musicality, cultural expression, and accessible movement. As both a practitioner and teacher, Sylver draws from traditional and contemporary dance vocabularies and transforms them into high-energy, inclusive experiences that connect dance, fitness, music, and community. His unique relationship to the form comes from bridging cultural dance traditions with contemporary fitness, making Afro-diasporic movement approachable to both experienced dancers and people with little or no formal dance training.
