What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Flamenco Dance: Flamenco dance is a powerful and expressive art form originating in Andalusia, southern Spain, shaped by centuries of cultural exchange among Andalusian, Spanish Romani (Gitano), and other communities. It combines intricate footwork, rhythmic body movements, hand gestures, and improvisation to express the music’s emotional intensity and complex rhythms.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

Omayra Amaya is a flamenco dancer, choreographer, teacher, and artistic director whose training is rooted in the Spanish Romani (Gitano) flamenco tradition. The daughter of flamenco dancers Olga and Curro Amaya, she began learning and performing at an early age and is the grandniece of legendary flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya. She holds a BFA in Dance from the Boston Conservatory, where she studied ballet, modern dance, and jazz, integrating this formal training with her deep knowledge of flamenco technique, musicality, compás, and improvisation. With more than 40 years of experience as a performer, choreographer, and educator, she is dedicated to preserving and sharing flamenco’s artistic traditions, cultural history, and family legacy.
