What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Kathak is one of eight classical dances from the northern region of India. Kathak originated as a storytelling art form and through its rich history has also become characterized by rhythmic footwork, swift and various pirouettes (chakkars), mathematical compositions, dynamic movements, and dramatic yet subtle expression from head to toe. The style I teach is both traditional and ever-evolving within the tradition.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

Anjali Nath is committed to sharing the range of possibilities and benefits of Kathak dance for oneself and across communities. Anjali‘s teaching style emphasizes the universality of the art and is steeped in the traditional style she trained in under Pandit Chitresh Das and his senior most disciple Gretchen Hayden since 1997. Anjali has toured across the US and India in prestigious, festivals and institutions and has been instrumental in growing the sister schools of Das’ legacy, nurturing the next generation of students, artists, and audiences.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

…I have felt the physical and holistic benefits of the art form for myself and have experienced how the dance serves to strengthen individuals, communities, and society. There are so many facets to the art and so many elements that are unique to the training style I come from that are worthy of sharing with the world. Kathak is still a hidden gem of an art form in the West and across the globe. I am passionate about the unique gift I hold and I love seeing how sharing the art benefits the lives of those it touches.
