What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
We teach Capoeira Contemporânea (Contemporary Capoeira), a style that blends elements from both Capoeira Angola and Capoeira Regional while embracing influences from across Brazil. Rooted in African and Brazilian history, this form reflects Capoeira’s constant evolution as a martial art, dance, and cultural expression.
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
With over 50 years of uninterrupted practice and 40 years of teaching, I founded Associação de Capoeira Mandingueiros dos Palmares (Capoeira MdP) in 1977 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Since then, I have dedicated myself to sharing Capoeira in Massachusetts and across the US. Our school practices Capoeira Contemporânea, rooted in Capoeira Regional created by the legendary Mestre Bimba. My Mestre, Mestre Itapuã, was one of his direct students, ensuring our lineage remains authentic and true.
Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…
…I am passionate about teaching this style because Capoeira is life itself—it shapes how I move, teach, and connect with others. My sons and I share this journey, working as a Capoeira family to honor our heritage and bring the art to new generations and communities.
