What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Bollywood dance emerged in India’s Hindi film industry, blending classical Indian forms like Kathak with folk styles, jazz, hip-hop, and Bollywood’s signature theatrical flair. The ‘sassy’ style specifically draws from the confident, expressive item numbers and glam sequences that became iconic in Bollywood cinema from the 1990s onward — think bold attitude, sharp facial expressions, and playful power. It’s since become a global phenomenon, celebrated for how it fuses cultural storytelling with high-energy, unapologetic self-expression.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

I’ve been teaching Bollywood dance for over 15 years, with formal training in Kathak, contemporary, and jazz that shapes how I approach movement and musicality. That blend gives me a unique lens on Bollywood — I draw on Kathak’s precision and expressive footwork, contemporary’s fluidity, and jazz’s sharp, dynamic energy to build choreography that feels both grounded and fresh. As a choreographer and performer, I’ve staged shows and competed at World of Dance finals in LA, and I bring that performance experience directly into how I coach students to perform with confidence, not just execute steps.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

I am passionate about teaching this style because Bollywood dance lets people step into a version of themselves that’s bold, expressive, and unafraid to take up space — and watching students find that confidence, often for the first time, is what keeps me coming back to the studio.
