Modern Connections is a Horton based modern dance technique class taught at a pace designed for the students in the room. Class begins with sequential and consistent warm-up, continues with center phrases that are designed to promote competence and growth of proper technique. Students build the necessary vocabulary and body awareness required for Flat Back, Lateral T, and Fortifications through proper corrections focused on alignment and detailed explanations of the initiation of movements.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

I began my formal training in Modern Dance 24yrs ago during my undergrad at Dean College under the tutelage of Nailah Randall-Bellinger. There I studied Limon, Graham, Dunham, Cunningham and Horton techniques. I continued my training in various programs and have worked with a variety of choreographers and genres post grad. Those experiences influence my comprehension of body mechanics and approach towards conveying information. I decided to attend the Horton Pedagogy program at the Alvin Ailey School and from there have taken a deep dive into my pedagogical approach that is able to reach students no matter where they are in their training.

Anja Voges (demonstrator/substitute) – is an arts administrator and dance artist based in Boston, Massachusetts. In May, 2023 she graduated cum laude from American University in Washington, DC with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Dance.

Anja is currently the Development Associate at North End Music & Performing Arts Center, a dancer, demonstrator, and teacher-in-training with Modern Connections, a 2024-2025 BIPOC Professional Dancer Mentee with MIDDAY Movement Series, and a freelance dancer.

Over the years she debuted six self-choreographed dance works, produced original research, and worked in various arts administration, peer facilitation, and community-oriented roles.

In all facets, Anja aims to create meaningful connections, engage with communities, and generate local impact.
