Jazz dance has its roots in Black vernacular dance, itself inspired by ancestral Africa rhythms and customs. The typical jazz class taught in local dance studios relies on styles including Black vernacular dance, Broadway and musical theater jazz, ballet, modern and tap. Marina’s turns and leaps class focuses on helping adult dancers build the strength to perform skills like jazz pirouettes, split leaps, center leaps, calypsos, firebirds, tilt jumps, extensions and illusions.
Pilates, developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s, focuses on the mind-body connection, alignment, spinal flexibility and strong musculature. George Balanchine, Martha Graham and Ted Shawn studied with Pilates, who also taught his mat class at the Jacob’s Pillow retreat. Sejal’s all-levels class targets your core, improves posture, enhances flexibility, and challenges your strength while sharpening your mind-body connection.
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
Marina has trained in jazz, ballet and lyrical classes for 30 years in Massachusetts, New York City, Maine and New Jersey. Growing up, she danced competitively at a dance studio in greater Boston. Currently, she is a member of local dance companies including Mosaic Dance Inc. and Alive Dance Collective. She began teaching an all-levels, affordably-priced leaps and turn class this year — she is continuing to work on her teaching practice and love incorporating feedback into her class structure.
