What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Twerk is a powerful cultural practice rooted in African and Afro-diasporic dance traditions, historically used for expression, celebration, healing, and community connection. What the world sees as a trend is actually a legacy of embodied freedom, resilience, and ancestral rhythm passed down through generations.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

My relationship to twerk spans over 12 years as the creator of The Boss Chick Dance Workout, where I’ve taught, performed, and trained thousands of women worldwide in twerk-based fitness and embodiment. My work is rooted in honoring the African and Afro-diasporic lineage of the movement while translating it into a structured, accessible practice that blends cardio, strength, somatics, and self-expression. As a practitioner and teacher, I’ve developed multiple formats—including Twerkasana™—that position twerk not just as dance, but as a tool for healing, confidence, and nervous-system release. My lived experience as a Black woman and culture bearer uniquely informs how I teach this form with intention, reverence, and empowerment.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

I am passionate about teaching this style because it reconnects women to their bodies, their confidence, and their ancestral power in a way that is both liberating and healing. Through twerk, I witness transformation—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually—as students reclaim joy, agency, and embodied self-expression.
