What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Flamenco is a form of song, dance, and instrumental (mostly guitar) music commonly associated with the Andalusian Roma (Gypsies) of southern Spain. (There, the Roma people are called Gitanos.) The roots of flamenco, though somewhat mysterious, seem to lie in the Roma migration from Rajasthan (in northwest India) to Spain between the 9th and 14th centuries. These migrants brought with them musical instruments, such as tambourines, bells, and wooden castanets, and an extensive repertoire of songs and dances. In Spain they encountered the rich cultures of the Sephardic Jews and the Moors. Their centuries-long cultural intermingling produced the unique art form known as flamenco. What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

I have been dancing and performing flamenco professionally for over 30 years. Throughout my career, I was also a member of three local flamenco companies: Ramon de los Reyes Spanish Dance Theatre, Omayra Amaya Flamenco Sin Limites and my own company, Flamenco Dance Project. I have studied both here and in Spain, and continue my studies (to keep current with the dance) at various workshops both here and abroad.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

it fills my soul, and I want to impart that to my students. I make it a point of really studying the different elements of the dance, especially el cante (singing) to teach my students the importance of the relationship between the dance and the singing.
