Fundamentals 1A assumes no dance experience at all, and will teach the fundamental connection techniques for partnered Balboa dancing, along with the primary figures of Balboa, and Fundamentals 1B refines those techniques and adds a few more figures. Class is taught ELEF (Everybody Leads Everybody Follows), which helps you better understand how both roles work and feel, so that beyond this series, you can choose the one that suits you, or choose to keep dancing in both! No partner is necessary, as we will rotate partners in class. PLEASE NOTE: CLASSES ARE CUMULATIVE, and drop-ins are not possible after the first 2 sessions of Fundamentals 1A. Join us September 15 for the start of Fundamentals 1A!

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Balboa is a vernacular swing dance from Southern California in the 1920s and 30s, and is indebted to the African-American roots and culture of Swing Jazz and Swing dancing. We encourage everyone to explore the history of this dance, the dancers that created it in Southern California, and the music and musicians that made it possible. Balboa today is an improvisational, joyful partner dance with a vibrant worldwide community, evolving into the present while honoring its origins.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

July and Stan have danced Balboa since the early 2000s, learning from original SoCal dancers and the second-generation teachers who came after them. We both deeply love social partner-dancing, and we teach so that more people can participate in this joyful community of movement and connection.
