Explore the expressive possibilities of two iconic flamenco elements: the mantón (shawl) and abanico (fan). This workshop focuses on the technical and artistic use of these traditional accessories, developing coordination, strength, timing, and movement quality while enhancing stage presence and expressive range. Students will learn fundamental techniques, transitions, and choreographic applications that integrate the mantón and abanico naturally into flamenco dance. Suitable for dancers wishing to expand their technical skills and artistic vocabulary.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
The legacy of flamenco is its enduring power as an international cultural symbol and a UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, deeply rooted in Spanish Gypsy culture and a fusion of Andalusian, Arab, and Jewish traditions. It continues to evolve as a vibrant art form, preserving human stories of struggle and joy, inspiring new artists, and influencing global music genres like Latin, rock, and jazz.
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
Omayra Amaya is a celebrated modern flamenco dancer and choreographer whose work blends deep Gypsy tradition with contemporary expression. The daughter of flamenco artists Olga and Curro Amaya and grandniece of the legendary Carmen Amaya, she began performing as a child, choreographed her first role at 12, and was touring internationally by 15.
A Boston Conservatory graduate, Omayra founded the Omayra Amaya Flamenco Dance Company in 1994 and launched a critically acclaimed nine-month residency at Boston Park Plaza that inspired a PBS documentary and the award-winning film Gypsy Heart. She has since performed worldwide—from Lincoln Center and flamenco festivals in Spain to sold-out tours across China—and appeared in The Pink Panther II alongside Steve Martin. Her choreographic work has been featured in interdisciplinary projects, major collaborations, and civic recognitions, including a Miami proclamation of “Omayra Amaya Day.” Recent productions such as INTIMO, Ritmo del Tiempo, and Antes Del Fin continue her mission to evolve the art form while honoring her rich legacy.
Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…
Flamenco is an art form rooted in the Andalusian region of southern Spain. This musical and dance genre is the result of a rich cultural fusion, including Gypsy, Moorish, Jewish, and Andalusian influences. Flamenco has been passed on to me by my family and it is the lens I use to express myself, life and situations.
