What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Heels dance has become increasingly popular over the last 5-10 years and while it’s a genre with it’s own technique, it’s largely informed by historic genres. Heels as a convergence of many lineages from the Latin/Ballroom scenes to burlesque to 1970s/1980s underground LGBTQ+ clubs. Similar to how jazz evolved from more social contexts to stage-presenting spectacles, heels has also taken on a widely commercial expression with major artists like Beyonce performing heels dancing from leading heels choreographers like Aisha Francis.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

As a dancer for 30 years, I received classical training in my youth, competed into high school, and received a BA in dance alongside recognition for “Outstanding Performance and Choreography.” In the classroom, I combine 20 years experience of teaching diverse ages, abilities, & backgrounds with my curriculum development knowledge to guide students toward their greatest potential. I create supportive learning environments that honor students’ unique strengths, needs, and learning styles while maintaining rigor because I believe that technical training supports artistry.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

I experienced transformation when I started training in the style and want to do the same for others.
