We will run Continuing Balboa drop-in classes the first four Tuesdays in November! For students who have completed Balboa Fundamentals 1A & 1B or their equivalent and are looking to develop their skills and pack their bag with more toys. All students must be comfortable with Pure Balboa (both basics & standard adlib steps), lollies, toss-outs, swivels, & out-and-ins. We hope to see all our students from the fall 1A / 1B series, plus anyone else with the pre-requisites (Fundamentals 1A & 1B or equivalent) that wants to work on Balboa! Then we’ll go on travel/holiday hiatus until after the new year.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Balboa is a vernacular swing dance from Southern California in the 1920s and 30s, and is indebted to the African-American roots and culture of Swing Jazz and Swing dancing. We encourage everyone to explore the history of this dance, the dancers that created it in Southern California, and the music and musicians that made it possible. Balboa today is an improvisational, joyful partner dance with a vibrant worldwide community, evolving into the present while honoring its origins.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

July & Stan have been dancing Balboa for more than 20 years, and have been teaching Balboa since 2010. We love partner connection and focus on teaching connection and movement technique, to empower students to create their own dance through technique + improvisation!
