Come with an open mind, in comfortable, modest clothing that doesn’t cover your feet, hair tied back, and ready to move from your head to your toes, inside and out! Learn how we make rhythms with different parts of our feet, use our voices to create vibrations, rhythms and melodies that complement our dance and how we bring in hand gestures and expression to build compositions and even stories! You will build focus, strength, stamina, and creativity as we move together and experience a unique sense of and perspective on holistic wellness. We are fortunate to have regular tabla accompaniment by master drummer, Akili Jamal Haynes, which only enhances the experience as your body and mind connect with the rhythms. Simply come experience all the dance has to offer YOU uniquely. It’s meant for anyone and everyone.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
Anjali teaches in the unique style of Pandit Chitresh Das, founded in the Lucknow Gharana (style) with influence of the Jaipur Gharana along with a technique he developed called Kathak Yoga, where you will learn how we can integrate multiple rhythms through our dance.
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
My kathak journey began with Gretchen Hayden, Founder of Chhandika Boston and Senior Disciple of Pandit Chitresh Das. Pandit Das was the pioneer of kathak dance bringing his rich training and upbringing in Kolkata, India to the US in 1971. I began my studies informally in 1997 while at Tufts University with Gretchenji and was hooked. From 2003 to 2011 I trained, taught, and toured as a member of the Chitresh Das Dance Company (CDDC) all across the US and India, holding lead roles such as Sita in Sita Haran. I have been steeped in this incredibly rich tradition of kathak, with it’s elements of dance, music, history, philosophy, math, and so much more and am thrilled to share with students and audiences widely in a manner that highlights how universal and accessible and FUN it really is!
Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…
…I have experienced what this unique style of dance and the unique style of training I have been steeped in and now teach has done for my own growth and wellbeing and I am inspired by how I see it impact others I reach through teaching, performance, and simply sharing. Through the art I have learned so much about the rich culture of India, my own heritage, and am able to connect and communicate with others through the universal language of rhythm and art and show others how to do the same. I see how others lives are enriched and I am honored to play my part in that.
