Get started with Balboa! This is a four week series suitable for all levels, including total beginners, that will get you up to speed with basic vocabulary and connection techniques for Balboa, and get you out on the floor dancing socially! This class series will be taught “ELEF”: Everyone Leads, Everyone Follows. Starting your Balboa journey with ELEF helps you understand the mechanics more quickly and more deeply. Though many dancers do choose to specialize in one role, starting out with ELEF helps you better understand how both roles work and feel, so that beyond this series, you can choose the one that suits you, or choose to keep dancing in both! No partner is necessary, as we will rotate partners in class. We recommend shoes with relatively slide-y soles such as hard leather or suede; sticky sneakers will make it hard to do some movements.

Cost: Pay What You Can – Suggested: $60 for 4-week series

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Balboa is a swing era dance that came out of the beach communities south of Los Angeles in the 1930s. Swing jazz is an African-American art form, and Balboa like all other swing dances values improvisation, personal expression, and connection between leader and follower.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

July & Stan have been dancing Balboa for more than 20 years, and have been teaching Balboa since 2010. We love partner connection and focus on teaching connection and movement technique, to empower students to create their own dance through technique + improvisation!

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

…swing jazz music makes me want to dance! And because improvisational partner dancing is the best antidote I know to the stresses of contemporary life in America, and I want that joy for everyone.
