Isaura’s methodology combines the warm up with setting intentions, flowing to dance moves in constant repetitions to improve their skills on the movement technique. Her teachings include traditional steps from the sacred and secular Afro- Indigenous Brazilian dances as well as from her own movement repertoire. Isaura engages participants to express themselves through movement, singing, clap rhythms and to complement their learns on the cultural foundation of all through her storytelling skills.

A special invitation is extended to BIPOC performers to take the workshop and then join in Isaura’s creative process from 1:00-4:00pm. The additional training time will focus on expression/interpretation, embodying Isaura’s movement style, singing, body percussion and storytelling. At the final session on August 17, there will be an informal showing highlighting the material that was developed. This workshop + training experience may lead to future performance opportunities with Isaura.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

My teachings of Afro-Brazilian Dance contain dance movements, chants and storytelling of the history of traditional African Brazilian Culture and its fusion with Brazilian Native Indigenous roots. The series dive into spiritual and social approach, into sacred and secular, between traditional and contemporary of my Brazilian Culture.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

I have been practicing and performing many of sacred and secular movements of dances from my Indigenous African Brazilian Cultures for over 40 years. On the past 25 years several those traditional movements have been incorporated into my classes and choreographic projects, now more than ever I give my dance classes the approach as a Healing Arts. I bring the traditional movements from the deep level of practice, feeling, the understanding of their meanings throughout the contemporary format. This workshop series brings my ritualistic manner of teach-learn-perform dance.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

…it is my true self art form and my medicine.
