aMaSSiT is your next deep step in identifying and articulating your unique choreographic voice. First introduced in 2013, The Dance Complex’s aMaSSiT program is a four-month long course of class “labs” focusing on choreographic skills and tool building. This unique program – open to choreographers of all dance genres – is structured both to foster those early in their choreographic ventures and and to deeply challenge artists with years of experience.

In the past, The Dance Complex has invited a variety of dance makers to join the lab, including those specializing in tap, burlesque, musical theater, contemporary ballet, and modern. The aMaSSiT program has received recognition and praise from dance professionals both locally and nationally, including Dance Magazine. aMaSSiT is funded, in part, by Cambridge Arts.

2018 Season

The 2018 season of aMaSSiT will emphasize artistic and administrative process. How does our creative process contribute to the success of our work in the scope of generating, structuring, and resolving movement? How does our administrative process, or lack thereof, contribute to the success of our work in terms of funding, promoting, and presenting our project? This session of aMaSSiT will pay equal mind to both of these questions by providing participants with two series of workshops, THINKING and MOVING, as well as ample opportunity to show and witness work for the purposes of peer response and critique. Special consideration will be given to any applicant who demonstrates a clear and strong desire to shake up their creative process and reprioritizing their administrative process. Thinking Workshops Descriptions

These interactive discussions will focus on various elements of being a successful administrator and director of your art. Topics will focus on the business of dance, including building effective relationships, providing and accepting critical response, marketing, development, and touring. These workshops will be open to the public.

This class will focus on best practices in engaging in critical response with peers, from the perspective of both the individual providing feedback and the individual accepting feedback. Other topics to be discussed will include: how to schedule and structure an effective open rehearsal and how/when to ask for feedback.

This class will explore current trends and best practices in promoting artistic projects. Topics of discussion will include: social media, newsletters, printed promotional material, and building relationships with media outlets.

This class will delve into the ins and outs of getting artistic work funded, particularly via local and national grants.

This class will focus on the concept of touring, regionally and beyond. Encompassed within this topic will be how to build relationships with and understand the needs of the Technical Director and Producer as a whole of the theater at which you are presenting work.

Moving Workshops Descriptions

These lab style workshops will focus specifically on movement and the theory of movement composition. Class will be active as participants will be asked to create or workshop movement phrases. The workshops will build upon one another as the course progresses. These workshops will be closed to the public.

This class will explore various tools and methods choreographers might use to generate and codify movement and movement phrasing. Class will begin with a short guided improvisation, during which time movement phrases will begin to develop. Participants will be asked to explore and expand upon those phrases and/or pre-existing phrases for the purpose of exploring concepts and tools introduced during the class.

This class will focus on how to structure movement. Different methods of movement structure will be discussed and explored, and participants will be asked to investigate and play with pre-existing sections of choreography in an effort to uncover effective ways of structuring their piece.

This class will focus on how to resolve movement and bring a body of movement to a close. Discussion will focus on how and if a choreographic work comes to an end, as well as how to present excerpts of work effectively.
