Sharon draws from her background, not only as an accomplished dancer but as a world champion martial artist.

I am passionate about teaching this style because…I am passionate about teaching Hip Hop dance style because: it is a celebration of life with and culture with roots in Africa as well as in Brazilian martial arts. This dance has the power to uplift, inspire and energize us in our daily lives, no matter what we may be facing or going through. It gives me a chance to give joy, hope and just plain fun to others through this dynamic and awesome dance form.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Hip Hop Dance began at block parties in the Bronx in the 1970’s and drew from dance moves inspired by African Dance, Brazilian martial arts (Capoeira) and many Kung Fu movies. Bronx Rapper Afrika Bambaata drew from his experience watching African tribal dancing in creating the first group of hip hop dancers. DJ Kool Herc, inspired by his Jamaican roots, created the musical beats by spinning two records simultaneously. With many other influences along the way, Hip Hop has established itself as a dance form with a long history and vital and dynamic presence in our culture.
