Sela Bailey

She/Her/Hers

About:

Sela has been a tap teacher since 2000, taking over Maureen Cosgrove’s Boston Tap classes at the Dance Complex in 2014. While at Smith College she studied in the Five College Dance Department, performing with the Celebrations Dance Company and the UMass University Dancers. She was a founding member of the Terpsichore Ensemble in Amherst, MA and taught tap classes in Amherst and Northampton, MA before moving to Boston. Sela teaches adult beginner and intermediate tap classes at the Dance Complex, and made her Dance Complex choreographic debut at the 2018 Spring Teaching Artists and Student Concert with students from the intermediate tap class. Her background is in Broadway and Soft Shoe tap.

I am passionate about teaching this style becauseI love sharing the joy of movement and making music with students whether they are trying something new as adults or returning to a childhood love of making noise with their feet.

Thursday 6:00-7:00p

Studio 5

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Tap is an American dance form with origins in slavery and the percussive dances of West African Juba dance and Irish step dancing. It developed through minstrel shows and vaudeville in the late 19th century and emerged along with jazz in the 20th century into the art form we know today.

What can students expect from this class?

Carrying on the tradition of Boston Tap, established by Maureen Cosgrove in 1976, these classes focus on developing technique, rhythm and musicality. Level 1 (Beginner) is geared toward those with no tap experience or those who want a refresher course. Classes are workshop format, typically 7 week sessions. Each class will build on the weeks before, but students may join at any time. Written notation for set warm-ups are available for those who are interested.
