Johara Boston
She/Her/Hers
About:
I began studying this dance form in 1991. I have been blessed to study with some of the great Egyptian, Turkish, folkloric, American Cabaret, and tribal fusion instructors that have lived or visited the US. I have gone numerous week-long intensives with Yours Sharif and others as well as private lessons and classes in NYC and Boston. I have dedicated so much of my life to this art form and want to pass on my knowledge and experience.
I am passionate about teaching this style because…I’m enchanted by the music and dances of the Middle East with their bittersweet melodies and rich, dynamic array of rhythms.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching? The more authentic name for this dance form is raqs sharqui (dance of the East) and its roots are in the Middle and Near East, primarily Egypt and Turkey. This dance form was brought to the US and Europe at the turn of the century, but not widely performed or taught until the 1950’s/60’s when the belly dance craze hit the states. The American cabaret style of belly dance is based on the legacy passed down from notable American teachers/performers who blended Middle Eastern influences with their innovations and movement styles from their dance backgrounds. |
What can students expect from this class? Students will learn earthy Egyptian, Turkish, & American Cabaret movements, combinations, & choreography and explore guided improvisation. Students will gain understanding of Arabic rhythms and music. Each student will be encouraged to learn technique, but develop their own style. |
