She/Her/Hers

About:

I began my formal training in Modern Dance 20yrs ago during my undergrad at Dean College under the tutelage of Nailah Randall-Bellinger. There I studied Limon, Graham, Dunham, Cunningham and Horton techniques. I continued my training in various programs and worked with a variety of choreographers and genres post grad. Those experiences influence my comprehension of body mechanics and approach towards conveying information. I decided to attend the Horton Pedagogy program at the Alvin Ailey School and from there have taken a deep dive into my pedagogical approach that is able to reach students no matter where they are in their training.

I am passionate about teaching this style because…I have seen the benefits of studying this technique both on and off the stage. It develops a body awareness and strength that allows a range of expression from novice to professional.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Unfortunately 2-3 sentences is inadequate to articulate the legacy of the style that I teach inclusive of history, cultural and geographic origin, but I do think that if folks are looking for more information about the Horton technique that I base my teachings around, they can use these resources to start: http://www.dancehistoryproject.org/index-of-artists/lester-horton/ & https://www.britannica.com/biography/Lester-Horton

What can students expect from this class?

Modern Connections is a Horton based modern dance technique class taught at a pace designed for the students in the room. Class begins with sequential and consistent warm-up, continues with center phrases that are designed to promote competence and growth of proper technique. Students builds the necessary vocabulary and body awareness required for Flat Back, Lateral T, Pelvis Press, Tables, Release Swings and Spirals through proper corrections focused on alignment and detailed explanations of the initiation of movements.
