About:
I was first exposed to Capoeira Angola in 1997 while attending Brown University. After graduation, and unable to resist the call of Capoeira, I moved to Boston in 2000 to continue training with Mestre Deraldo. Since then, I regularly traveled to universities and events to assist Mestre in demonstrating and teaching of the beautiful art of Capoeira Angola. In 2007, I graduated as a Treinel and began to teach classes at MIT’s Alumni and Wang Fitness Center as part of the school’s fitness curriculum. I have visited Brazil on multiple occasions to study the art in its native land, and in 2016, was first invited to Brazil to teach my own workshops. I graduated as a Contra Mestre in 2017.
I am passionate about teaching this style because…Capoeira Angola was developed by the enslaved peoples of Brazil to liberate themselves, physically and spiritually. It demonstrates the incredible intelligence, ingenuity, and tenacity of the African peoples in the Americas. If those who came before us could use this art to become free while still enslaved, what can it help us achieve in our own lives? What struggles can Capoeira Angola help us overcome?
Saturday 3:00p - Capoeira Angola
Capoeira Angola with Contra Mestre Calango
Saturday 3:00-5:00p
Studio 2
What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching? Capoeira Angola developed in Brazil from a variety of African roots. N’golo from Angola, rhythms from Congo, and acrobatics from Guinea combined to form a martial art disguised as a dance and played like a game. All these elements plus a deliberate sense of fun result in a vigorous workout for the body and mind! |
What can students expect from this class? This class is fun and challenging! We warm up, practice basic movements, and then assemble them into a sequence. The sequence is then repeated in pairs, rotating between different levels. At the end, we play music and have a small roda to play Capoeira Angola and practice what we have learned. Beginners are shown the basics and will be surprised at how quickly they grow! |
