SUMMARY:Holding Space: for Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Holding Space: for Then and Now is a contemporary dance production that explores the relationship between our past and current selves. This collaborative showcase brings together two choreographic voices whose shared artistic values prioritize the power of safe\, supportive creative communities. \nThe performance is structured as a dialogue between two landscapes: Then and Now. Together\, these works investigate the unspoken threads of our history. Through a mix of raw\, dynamic movements and quiet witnessing\, the dancers navigate a visceral journey of isolation\, shared strength and connection. \nHolding Space is a testament to resilience. It celebrates the beauty found when we stop trying to outrun our history and instead learn to hold space for the entirety of our story. \nLINDSAY GIBBONS & EXCEPTIONAL DANCE COMPANY: \nLindsay Gibbons is a graduate from Keene State College\, where she received bachelor’s degrees in both dance and psychology. While at Keene State\, she trained under Cynthia McLaughlin\, Sarah Lass and Meredith Bove. She has had the pleasure of working with and performing in the original works of Boris Willis and Ellen Oliver\, among others. Currently\, Lindsay is working as a choreographer and dance educator and is the founder of Exceptional Dance Company. Presently\, she continues to perform with Collective Moments Dance Company. \nLindsay’s choreography is rooted in storytelling. Through dynamic movements\, risk taking and creativity\, she seeks to honor her dancers as individuals while simultaneously offering them a safe space to step outside their comfort zones. \nExceptional Dance Company\, established in June 2024 and based in New England\, is the embodiment of a deep commitment to honoring the unique differences within ourselves and others\, viewing these as exceptional traits. With a creative practice rooted in storytelling\, the company strives to create work that inspires individuality and fosters profound connection amongst artists and audiences. In a society that often marginalizes difference\, EDC passionately celebrates the unique aspects of ourselves and others. Driven by Lindsay’s dynamic artistic vision\, EDC aims to be a safe haven for artists who defy typical molds\, embracing their unique perspectives and creative expression. EDC aims to provoke thought and evoke emotion in every performance\, cultivating an inclusive community where authentic self-expression is not only welcomed\, but celebrated. \nKAYLEE MAHAN & COLLECTIVE MOMENTS DANCE COMPANY: \nKaylee Mahan is a graduate of Roger Williams University\, receiving a Bachelor of Arts\, in Dance. Kaylee has been fortunate to have spent a semester abroad in London\, where she was immersed in a new world of dance and choreography. Training at the London Contemporary Dance School\, The Place\, she and her classmates worked closely with Choreographer Renaud Wiser as he set a piece for them to perform back in the States. During her time in London\, she studied under educators and choreographers such as Stephen Pelton\, Jorge Crecis\, and Tory Trotter. At school\, Kaylee was fortunate to work with a diverse group of artists such as Sean Curran\, Tiffany Mills\, Christina Robson\, Jenny Rocha\, and more. Kaylee has been a dancer and choreographer with Evolve Dynamicz\, a Boston-based company since 2017. Currently\, Kaylee is working as a choreographer\, and dance educator\, and is the Founder and Director of Collective Moments Dance Company. \nCollective Moments Dance Company established in January 2021 is a New England-based dance company. CMDC has been created to share Kaylee Elizabeth’s passion for choreography\, improvisation\, and movement while engaging with the importance in honoring dancers as individual people; as we create\, share\, and move thru spaces safely. Movement influences from improv\, gestural/pedestrian movement\, and contemporary dance\, we use our platform to advocate\, speak\, and showcase the importance of mental health by sparking conversations\, creating safe spaces\, and making it an integral part of ALL WORK. \nTickets Here\n\nIf you or a guest in your party has accessibility needs for this event\, please contact Joe Juknievich at joe@dancecomplex.org or (617) 547-9363.

SUMMARY:Echoes of Time
DESCRIPTION:Echoes of Time will feature a series of solo works in the classical Indian dance style of Bharathanatyam. They will explore how rhythm bends and shifts\, how cycles unfold\, and how our own perception shapes the experience of movement. Through traditional pieces that weave together narrative expression and intricate rhythmic structure\, the evening reflects on temporality both in story and in form. \nIn addition\, we will present select duet works from the Anubhava Dance Company\, performed with dancer Shriya Srinivas. \nDR. SHRIYA SRINIVASAN: \nDr. Shriya Srinivasan is a Bharathanatyam artist known for her vibrant stage presence and mature emotive depth\, trained under Guru Smt. Sujatha Srinivasan. Shriya has performed widely at prestigious venues in the United States and in India. Blending her training in Carnatic music\, neuroscience\, and biomedical engineering\, she brings a unique perspective to her practice and choreography. Shriya cofounded and co-directs the Anubhava Dance Company. Shriya recently co-curated ‘Intersections’\, an international conference focused on the evolution of the Indian classical forms. \nTickets Here\n\nIf you or a guest in your party has accessibility needs for this event\, please contact Joe Juknievich at joe@dancecomplex.org or (617) 547-9363.

SUMMARY:The Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The Gathering is an evening length performance experience that brings communities together through the joy\, power\, and history of Street and Club dance. Weaving live DJ sets\, poetry\, storytelling\, and movement\, the work creates an immersive environment where rhythm\, memory\, and shared presence take center stage. \nRooted in African Diasporic social dance traditions\, The Gathering honors the cultural spaces where these forms were born\, including family gatherings\, clubs\, parks\, basements\, basketball courts\, and outdoor cyphers. For this Dance Complex series performance\, the theater is intentionally reimagined as a communal space\, cultivating the same energy\, freedom\, and connection found in those original gathering places. The audience is not just watching; they are part of the exchange. \nCreated in collaboration with professional dance artists from New York\, Rhode Island\, Connecticut\, and Massachusetts\, the work reflects intergenerational knowledge\, lived experience\, and collective joy. Inspired by the artist’s upbringing immersed in Hip-Hop culture in Springfield\, Massachusetts\, The Gathering invites audiences into a personal and communal journey through American social dance shaped by resilience\, creativity\, and celebration. \nAt its core\, The Gathering is about togetherness. It creates space for dancers\, non-dancers\, and community members to connect across differences\, feel with one another\, and recognize shared humanity. Full of joy\, rhythm\, and spirit\, the performance is both a celebration and a declaration that affirms Street and Club dance as living cultural practices and powerful sites of community\, belonging\, and joy. \nSHAKIA “THE KEY” BARRON: \nShakia “The Key” Barron is an accomplished choreographer\, performer\, and educator specializing in African Diasporic Street and Club dance forms\, with a focus on Hip-Hop\, House\, and Funk styles. She is the Class of 1929 Dr. Virginia Apgar Assistant Professor of Dance at Mount Holyoke College and the Artistic Director of Kia The Key & Company. \nBarron is widely recognized for her passionate teaching and commitment to honoring the roots\, history\, and cultural integrity of Street and Club dance forms while creating spaces for embodied connection\, kinesthetic empathy\, and communal joy. Her work bridges community-based practice and academic inquiry\, making these forms more visible and accessible within institutional settings without separating them from their cultural foundations. \nShe has choreographed and directed over 70 works presented at colleges\, festivals\, and renowned dance institutions including Bates Dance Festival and Jacob’s Pillow. As a performer\, Barron has toured nationally and internationally with Face Da Phlave Entertainment\, Illstyle and Peace Productions\, and Rennie Harris Puremovement\, and has shared stages with major Hip-Hop artists and NBA halftime productions. \nThrough Kia The Key & Company\, she looks forward to continuing to build spaces for gathering\, collaboration\, and cultural exchange by touring her evening-length work The Gathering and bringing Street and Club dance into theaters\, public spaces\, and communities across the country. Her ongoing work is rooted in joy\, connection\, and the belief that dance is a living practice for bringing people together. \nTickets Here\n\nIf you or a guest in your party has accessibility needs for this event\, please contact Joe Juknievich at joe@dancecomplex.org or (617) 547-9363.
