SUMMARY:Limón Technique with Aaron Selissen
DESCRIPTION:This class explores the core principles of Limón Technique\, including breath\, opposition\, suspension\, weight and gravity\, fall and recovery. Exercises and phrase work draw from classic Limón repertory as well as contemporary movement. These principles become a lens for exploring movement within and beyond a traditional Limón aesthetic. \nCost: $20\n \n*NEW* The Dance Complex requires ALL visitors to have a Membership\, Guest Pass\, or $5 Day Pass to access the building. \nREGISTER HERE\n\nWhat is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?\nLimón Technique grew out of the work of José Limón\, who developed his approach to modern dance in the mid-20th century\, building on the teachings of Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. The technique emphasizes the expressive potential of breath\, weight\, gravity\, and the natural rhythms of the body. Its influence continues through both the preservation of Limón’s repertory and the ongoing exploration of its principles by generations of dancers and choreographers. \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?\nI danced with the Limón Dance Company for many years\, where I trained with Carla Maxwell\, the company’s former and longest-serving Artistic Director\, as well as numerous teachers who had worked directly with José Limón. This experience gave me a deep\, firsthand connection to the technique\, repertory\, and artistic legacy of the company. As a performer\, choreographer\, and teacher\, I continue to explore how the principles at the heart of Limón Technique can inform contemporary movement and offer dancers new ways of understanding the body and its expressive potential. \nFinish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…\nI am passionate about teaching this style because its principles offer an endlessly rich way to explore the body\, movement\, and expression. I love how breath\, weight\, gravity\, and suspension can transform movement from a series of steps into something deeply human and alive. These ideas remain relevant far beyond the technique itself. \n\nHow can students learn more about this offering?\nWebsite: www.barkinselissenproject.org\nWebsite: aaronselissen.com \nContact Information\nContact Aaron:\naarons@barkinselissenproject.org

SUMMARY:Inheritance: A Litany
DESCRIPTION:“Inheritance: A Litany” is a deeply intimate\, yet universal\, personal narrative\, dance-opera-play\, and comic drama created and performed by Janis Brenner. Inspired by Ms. Brenner’s late parents\, the 51-minute work is a journey into the myriad of ways Ms. Brenner “became” her parents—inheriting her father’s wavy hair and sarcasm\, her mother’s singing voice and fragile bones. The autobiographical one-woman show reveals aspects of a family’s story\, as well as the nature of how we become who we are. The interdisciplinary tour-de-force also uncovers what make us each unique\, complicated\, and fragile human beings. This show is appropriate for ages 14 and up. \n“We need artists like Ms. Brenner now in this world\, as she crosses genres\, asks hard questions\, and brings a gentleness and tenderness to her rendering of parents who were equal parts loving and exasperating\, protecting and needy\, known and misunderstood. We emerge emboldened\, ready to create our own litanies\, ready for family voices to speak.” – Cynthia Darling\, All About Solo\, 2019 \nJANIS BRENNER: \nJanis Brenner is a renowned\, multi-award-winning dancer/choreographer/singer/teacher\, and Artistic Director of Janis Brenner & Dancers in NYC. Honors include: “Bessie” Award in Meredith Monk’s “The Politics of Quiet”\, Lester Horton Award in L.A.\, Fund for US Artists at International Festivals\, U.S. State Department\, Asian Cultural Council\, The Trust for Mutual Understanding\, US Embassies in Moscow\, Bosnia\, Jakarta and Dakar\, O’Donnell Green Music and Dance Foundation (multiple grants) and a commission from the Whitney Museum of American Art for “The Memory Project.” \nHer work has been commissioned/re-staged on more than 55 companies and colleges worldwide. Brenner worked closely for years with Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble\, Michael Moschen\, Annabelle Gamson\, and with Murray Louis Dance Company\, Bat Sheva Dance Company and Alwin Nikolais. She was an esteemed faculty member of The Juilliard School\, serving as Choreographic Mentor for the Choreographers & Composers course\, who also teaches at Steps Conservatory and Marymount/Northeastern Univ-NY. Ms. Brenner’s “Inheritance: A Litany” won the “Best Production\,” “Best Composer\,” and “Best Lighting Design” awards at the 2018 United Solo Theatre Festival as well as the 2019 Critic’s Choice Award from All About Solo-Off Broadway. \nTickets Here\n“Inheritance: A Litany” reiterates that Janis Brenner is one of our most brilliant and engaging storytellers–blending the evocative and the provocative. She transfixes and transports us with a sublime fusion of musical\, physical\, and textual poetry.” American Dance Festival – D.K. Britt\, Chatham Life & Style\, 2022 \n\nIf you or a guest in your party has accessibility needs for this event\, please contact Joe Juknievich at joe@dancecomplex.org or (617) 547-9363.
