SUMMARY:Intermediate/Advanced Ballet with Dean Vollick
DESCRIPTION:Class begins with a thorough set of exercises at the barre that last from 30 to 45 minutes. Centre practice follows\, and may consist of a battement tendu exercise\, a battement jeté exercise\, a grand battement exercise\, small and/or large adage\, stationary turns\, traveling turns\, and petite and grand allegro enchaînement (small and big jumps). Classes are structured so that the dancer warms up their feet\, legs\, hips and upper body gradually. As class progresses there are more changes of weight and eventually\, sudden changes of direction. Live music is provided by a pianist\, that ranges from classical pieces to selections from ballet repertoire to improvisational contemporary music. \nCost: $20 Single Class | $15.00 barre | 5-class package $90.00 \n*NEW* The Dance Complex requires ALL visitors to have a Membership\, Guest Pass\, or $5 Day Pass to access the building. \nPlease register in studio with the class assistant\nAccepted Payments: Cash\, Check\, Venmo \n\nWhat is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?\nBallet originated in the Italian Renaissance courts around 1500 as large balls or spectacles that were performed by members of the royal court. The French king\, Louis XIV\, created the first academy and the positions\, steps\, and movements of the ballet were collected and codified. The spectacles began to be performed by artists that were trained in the academy\, originally as part of an opera\, and later as ballets that told a story through music\, mime\, and dance. Over the centuries ballet has influenced folk dance styles of many (mainly European) nations and\, more recently\, has been influenced by folk\, modern\, and contemporary forms of dance from all countries. \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?\nI had a professional dance career that spanned more than twenty years and included company work in both ballet and contemporary companies as well as dancing\, choreographing\, and teaching as a freelance artist. I returned to school to complete a two-year dance teaching diploma program at Canada’s National Ballet School. I trained extensively in the Vaganova and Royal Academy of Dance ballet training methods and had exposure to the Cecchetti and Balanchine methods of training. The program also included studies in human anatomy\, kinesiology\, and conditioning for dancers. Since moving to Boston in 2001\, I have become a certified Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® instructor and those practices inform the way that I teach ballet. \nFinish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…\nThere are always moments when all of the words\, steps\, and expectations disappear\, and dancers become one with the music\, and express themselves through movement. \nAccompanist\nDiran Heller \n\nContact Information\nContact Dean:\ndeanv@me.com | (617) 407-1266

More than learning steps\, the class is about moving for joy\, expressing your personality\, and building confidence in a supportive community. It gives dancers space to let go of everyday stress\, embrace their own style\, and feel powerful through movement. \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?\nChris began dancing in 2007\, finding joy\, confidence\, and self-expression through pop and K-pop choreography. He began teaching cardio dance at fitness centers in Indonesia in 2011 and has continued developing his practice through years of teaching\, performing\, and creating accessible choreography\, including as a Dance Complex teaching artist since 2014. Dance Sassy is his own open-style approach\, drawing inspiration from pop performance\, jazz-funk\, hip hop\, and K-pop while prioritizing clear\, step-by-step instruction. His relationship to the form is rooted in community and in creating a space where dancers of different backgrounds and experience levels can feel welcomed\, expressive\, and confident. \nFinish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…\nI am passionate about teaching this style because I have experienced how dance can relieve stress\, build confidence\, and help people reconnect with joy.
