SUMMARY:Medicine Dance: The Journey
DESCRIPTION:PREPARATION: Please bring a journal/paper\, a pen\, and water. \nCost: $40 advanced registration | $45 day of \nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOther payment avenues:\nVenmo: @Allison-Talis\npaypal https://www.paypal.me/allisontalis\nZelle: sisonkeart08@gmail.com\nDiscounts available- Email Allison directly allisontalis@gmail.com\n\n  \nWelcome to our Monthly Journey. A curated experience that is a bit different each time\, weaving sacred ritual\, creative modalities\, somatic awareness and movement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe begin with Soul Dance dance and then move into a guided process created by Allison called Emotion in Motion- where the individual and the collective meet. We move and dance our ancestral and our now\, our epigenetic inheritance\, the ones we want to keep and the ones we want to unhook from. We move and dance our grief and our joy\, our uncertainty and what we know in our bones. \nThe Dance is a path back into the wisdom of our bodies. It is a movement language and framework that recognizes the body holds memories\, emotions\, and experiences that can be accessed and processed through body awareness\, movement\, expression and communal connection in a trauma-informed container. \nThrough the dance we can move into concealed spaces\, honoring and acknowledging all of our parts- to know and befriend them all. To welcome our parts out of exile and into new patterns and forms of expression and relating\, that allow us to become the humans made for these times. \nA guided improvisational movement practice that engages somatic awareness to facilitate personal growth\, emotional well-being\, and collective healing. Welcoming participants of all experience levels\, bodies and identities. We dance to release stored tension\, emotions and patterns. We dance to integrate our experiences and we dance to remember who we really are. \nWe enter in a cycle of movement that begins slow\, builds in intensity\, peaks\, lightens\, and then settles. Through verbal instructions\, participants are invited to explore\, in their own bodies way – a variety of movement patterns\, physical inquiries\, and focal points. The journey is curated to an intentional and eclectic world music soundscape. It is a journey where you might sweat (though you are always in control of your rhythm and pace) \nWe will engage in somatic practices to slow down\, regulate our emotional\, physical and mental landscapes and welcome balance\, calm and deeper knowing. The Journey is a tool to help us navigate stress\, anxiety\, uncertainty and fear\, while also celebrating life. It is an experience to come back HOME again and again to that which is real\, that which is now and that which is eternal. \nWe will land and anchor with meditation and visualization\, followed by our closing circle. \n\nWhat is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?\nSoul Dance and Emotion in Motion will be the primary movement part of the process. We will engage somatic practices and meditation to slow down\, land and anchor. \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?\nAt the confluence of decades immersed in study\, training\, professional and personal experience\, Allison developed Emotion-in-Motion as a process for creating her work. Allison is deeply influenced by early artistic years working at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company\, Double Edge Theatre\, dozens of theatre and dance artists in NYC and encountering the work of Pina Bausch. The work is visceral\, raw and moves between the highly artistic to the simple and profound. With over 26 years as a theatre director\, collaborative choreographer\, somatic therapist and Historical trauma specialist\, Allison aims to assist artists\, creatives and all humans- in landing in their fullest most authentic expression. Allison is a somatic therapist and the creator of Soul Dance and Emotion in Motion\, out of twenty-five years of study\, training\, and practice in the performing and healing arts. In her role as the National Healing & Wellness Practitioner for the Joyful Heart Foundation\, she developed and led programs\, workshops\, and therapeutic retreats for survivors of sexual assault\, domestic violence\, and child abuse—as well as for the healers working on the frontlines of trauma. She was the Founder of Creative Seeds\, a non-profit organization\, which focused on working with communities through creative arts immersion projects and initiatives in both South Africa and the United States. \nCertifications include Trauma Resiliency Model\, Yoga for Trauma\, Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapist\, Historical Trauma Specialist. She holds a Master’s Degree in Theatre with a focus on addressing Historical Trauma and Collective Healing. \nAllison was named one of the 2015 United States Presidential Scholars’ most influential teachers by the United States Secretary Department of Education. She served as the Department Head of Movement\, Dance\, and Devising\, where she also taught movement at the Professional Performing Arts School of New York City. She is a Theater Director and has directed at numerous theaters in New York City\, regionally\, and internationally. She received mentorship as an Assistant Director at the Steppenwolf Theatre. She was an ongoing Resident Director with New York University’s First Look Theatre Company\, a member of the Lincoln Center Theatre Directors’ Lab\, and a 2004 SSDC Traube Fellowship nominee. Allison has studied\, trained\, certified\, practiced\, and walked many paths and methodologies in the creative arts\, mental health\, and spiritual realms. \nFinish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…\n…It is one of the most life-giving\, life-affirming\, connective practices I have ever engaged in! \n\nHow can students learn more about this offering?\nWebsite: allisontalis.com \nContact Information\nContact:\nallisontalis@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Community Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Dance Complex presents a Community Concert\, showcasing the diversity\, depth\, and commitment of and to dance from those who move in our spaces. \nThis dynamic performance highlights the rich diversity of movement that fills The Dance Complex each day. Audiences will experience an exciting mix of new and recent works\, brought to life by both professional performers and passionate student dancers in an eclectic celebration of creativity\, expression\, and community. \nTickets Here\n\n\n\nCHRISTINA HARRINGTON/TAPPIN’ WITH TINA: \nI Ain’t Worried: Beginner Tap group piece designed to invoke joy and goofiness during a particularly stressful state of the world. The song is “I Ain’t Worried” by OneRepublic from the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack. The piece is a carefree\, upbeat number that outlines a positive mindset amidst the chaos of daily life. It’s a short\, fast-paced burst of fun performed by my beginner/all-level students who come to each class carrying positive attitudes and a passion to learn and be in community.\nYU-LING HU/YULING SPANISH DANCE: \nGarrontin y Tangos: This Flamenco dance delivers a vibrant and festive celebration\, radiating a playful charm that instantly lifts the spirits of any audience through its infectious\, upbeat energy. \nGuajiras: Experience the breezy elegance of the Guajiras\, a “round-trip” style that infuses traditional Flamenco with the tropical soul and rhythmic sway of colonial Cuba. This performance celebrates a cultural fusion where Spanish guitar meets Caribbean grace\, utilizing the props Abanicos (fans) and storytelling lyrics to evoke the sun-soaked spirit of Havana. \n \n\n\nSHARON MONTELLA/DANGEROUS BROOD: \nThe City: The City presents several hip hop pieces that vary in style and flavor ranging from Old School to Contemporary Hip Hop and from upbeat and positive to darker street vibe. \n \nBRENDAN FOLEY/SALSA RICURA: \nMoliendo Cafe: Students from Salsa Ricura’s Level 2 class will showcase their On 2 / New York Style partnered salsa to Ismael Rivera’s lively and rhythmic rendition of Moliendo Cafe.\n\n\nCARMEN RIZZO: \nLiberdade (substantivo feminino): This short contemporary dance solo is an inspiring\, informative\, liberating and reparative excerpt from a larger project that reflects on political exclusion and its relation to freedom and movement. Stemming from research on how women’s rights were fought for (who was involved\, who is remembered\, how the stories are told) and contextualizing to the current political climate\, the dance explores a perpetually imperfect feminist woman\, questioning when to stand up and when to rest and conform. In a world where there is no winning\, every day is a victory.\nANJALI NATH AND KHELNA DANCE: \nChhands: Rhythms at Play: Chhands are playful rhythms and syncopations that are built on the complex mathematical music structures in Indian classical music and dance. Kathak Dance Artist\, Anjali Nath\, and her students of Khelna Kathak will share Kathak Yoga where the dancer becomes their own musician\, reciting\, singing\, or playing the repeated rhythm cycle on an instrument while overlaying complex patterns of the feet with expression. This technique is a full union and expression of the mind and body\, developed as a means to push beyond one’s own boundaries. As the rhythms of the music and dance come together in a playful exchange (sawal jawab)\, the fun ensues as it also becomes a meditation in motion! Stay connected for classes\, performances\, and events in your community! @khelna_kathak @anjnath www.anjali-nath.com \n \n\n\nDEAN VOLLICK: \nTitle TBD: Two short solos: One a classical ballet piece in the style of George Balanchine\, and the second a contemporary ballet piece.\nBACK POCKET DANCERS: \nWings of the Butterfly: “Wings of the Butterfly” is a modern dance based on a South American folk story. The dance chronicles the story of a young girl who follows a butterfly (her dreams of a more exciting world)\, learning that the life you know and love\, even as you change\, is all around you. \n \n\n\n\n  \n\nIf you or a guest in your party has accessibility needs for this event\, please contact Joe Juknievich at joe@dancecomplex.org or (617) 547-9363.
