SUMMARY:Modern 55+ (In-Person & Virtual) with Andy Taylor
DESCRIPTION:This class focuses on strengthening your body and increasing your movement confidence. As we age\, we lose muscle mass and worry about falling. For beginners\, flow / sequential movement are a challenge. In class we strengthen\, work on getting up from the floor and work on balance and building grey matter through challenging sequences. \nCost: $15.00 Single Class \nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION: Not Required\, Drop-Ins Welcome\nVIRTUAL CLASS REGISTRATION\nAccepted Payments: Cash\, Check\, Venmo\, PayPal\, Zelle \n\nWhat is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?\nI have worked on strengthening dancers and self-identified “non-dancers.” I love to find the best way to help people understand movement and how to accomplish transitions between movements. I have been cirtified in Better Brain & Balance as well as I have taught this class for over 18 years. \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?\nAndy Taylor got her BFA in Dance from UMass Amherst. She has taught modern\, jazz\, and international folk dance for over 5 decades. She has certifications in Scottish Country dance\, Better Brain and Balance\, and Autism Dance Therapy\, and she has taught locally and nationally. Her training in modern dance includes Horton\, Limon\, Simonson Technique\, and Luigi Jazz. \nFinish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…\n…All people can move and what we lack is confidence. Work on the basics of transfer of weight and following paths with arms and legs; we progress. Moving to music\, breathing through the anxiety\, having a supportive community are all parts of the whole which make us resilient and help us thrive. Expanding our movement vocabulary allows for more freedom inside and out. \nAccompanists\, Assistants\, or Regular Substitutes:\nFormer Instructor of Modern 55+ – Mahala Beams \nRegular Substitute – Nancy Murphy \n\nHow can students learn more about this offering?\nWebsite: www.andytaylordance.com \nContact Information\nContact:\nataydance@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Energetic Reset: A Restorative Sound Bath
DESCRIPTION:One-hour\, in-person sound bath with live instrumentation. The experience is designed to promote deep relaxation and mindfulness. While not a traditional performance\, the session creates an immersive soundscape for passive participation. Participants will lie down on their own yoga mats\, or sit comfortably as they absorb the healing vibrations. \nA sound bath is a deeply immersive experience that promotes relaxation\, stress relief\, and mental clarity. The vibrations from instruments like crystal singing bowls\, chimes\, an ocean drum\, and gongs help calm the nervous system\, release tension\, and encourage a meditative state. It offers a deeply restorative experience\, helping participants release tension\, quiet the mind\, and achieve a state of deep relaxation. A sound bath provides a powerful reset\, leaving attendees feeling grounded\, refreshed\, and reconnected with themselves. \nDR. JOANN TOPOROWSKI OF TOP VIBRATIONS: \nJoann is a certified sound therapy practitioner and licensed psychologist. She has been practicing psychology since 2004. She has been working with psychotherapy patients on an individual basis since 2011. \nWhat was a free yoga class in Boston Common turned out to be a game-changer for Joann in 2023. The yoga teacher taught a half-hour of yoga and provided a 25-minute sound bath. Joann had never been to a sound bath\, but it was downhill from there. For Joann played the piano for years as a kid and the best summer in her 20s was spent in weekly drum lessons\, so sound therapy is the perfect blend of Joann’s musical past and her helping personality. She is passionate about offering her caring energy to people in larger groups. \nJoann earned a bachelor’s\, master’s\, and doctorate in psychology. While she is a native Southern Californian\, she lives in Boston with her loving husband\, who pulls her heavy wagon of instruments. She married into a skiing family. She learned to ski black diamonds and can ski on ice\, unless she’s in California or Utah where this is little ice (thank\, goodness). She also loves to practice Pilates and loves Boston sports (except for their basketball team\, as she is a lifelong Lakers fan). \nTickets Here\n\nIf you or a guest in your party has accessibility needs for this event\, please contact Joe Juknievich at joe@dancecomplex.org or (617) 547-9363.

SUMMARY:Beginner and Intermediate Tap for All Levels
DESCRIPTION:Classes teach Broadway style tap and focus on repetitive technique to encourage muscle memory and the confidence to create clear sounds. Inclusion is a priority so that all students feel welcome. Classes are “drop-in”\, meaning you may join any week and there’s no “semester” commitment. Past steps are always reviewed with the introduction of 1 or 2 new steps or combos each class. Similar to a yoga class\, students work at their own individual levels and build up skill at their own pace. Beginners will feel comfortable regardless of when they join. \nCost: $16 for 1-hour \nREGISTER HERE\nPre-registration is encouraged but not required. Drop-ins are welcome. \nAccepted Payments: Cash\, Venmo (@christina-harrington-7) \n\nWhat is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?\nTap dancing began as an answer to the horrors of colonial enslavement…with no musical instruments\, Irish and West African slaves turned to their own feet to create rhythms and percussion while pulling movement and technique from traditional tribal and cultural dances. Sounds were initially made with wooden soles\, then pennies and bottle caps\, finally becoming the modern metal plates screwed to the ball and heel of the shoes. These dances made their way to minstrel and vaudeville shows\, eventually transforming into the broadway and rhythm style tap dancing we know today. \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?\nChristina Harrington joined The Dance Complex as a Teaching Artist in May 2012. As a child she studied tap\, jazz\, and ballet at the Paula Coffey Dance Center in East Bridgewater\, MA from 1987-1995 where tap was always her favorite. From 1996-2001\, she was a member of the dance troupe Orchesis at Elmira College\, and an assistant choreographer for the Elmira College summer theatre program. After several years operating with with KSA Dance in Chelmsford\, Christina formed “Tappin’ With Tina” where classes focus on repetitive technique and prioritize inclusion so that all adult students feel welcome to learn at their own pace\, regardless of experience\, age\, or ability. \nFinish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…\n…Anyone can do it\, it’s incredibly fun\, there are so many styles\, and you can make your own music with your feet!
