SUMMARY:Beginner to Intermediate Modern Connections
DESCRIPTION:Modern Connections is a Horton based modern dance technique class taught at a pace designed for the students in the room. There I studied Limon\, Graham\, Dunham\, Cunningham and Horton techniques. I continued my training in various programs and have worked with a variety of choreographers and genres post grad. Those experiences influence my comprehension of body mechanics and approach towards conveying information. I decided to attend the Horton Pedagogy program at the Alvin Ailey School and from there have taken a deep dive into my pedagogical approach that is able to reach students no matter where they are in their training. \nFinish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…\n…I have seen the benefits of studying this technique both on and off the stage. It develops a body awareness and strength that allows for a range of expression from novice to professional. \nAccompanists\, Assistants\, and Regular Substitutes:\nAnja Voges (demonstrator/substitute) – is an arts administrator and dance artist based in Boston\, Massachusetts. SUMMARY:Stretching & Mobility
DESCRIPTION:In my stretching classes\, you can expect a full-body stretch approached gently and mindfully\, without forcing or pushing for extremes. The focus is not on achieving a specific goal\, but on developing mobility\, ease\, and freedom in the body. It emphasizes conscious work with the body through proper stretching and mobility\, allowing people to move with strength\, control\, and freedom. This approach supports long-term physical awareness and healthy movement habits. \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?\nI am a professional ballet dancer in the past\, and stretching was part of my daily routine throughout my 19-year career. It is what prepares the body for movement\, but also helps you truly feel it\, notice areas of tension\, and understand what needs more attention. Stretching creates a basic sense of lightness and mobility that supports not only dance\, but everyday life. I strongly believe that stretching is important for everyone. \nFinish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…\nbecause it helps you to feel better. \n\nHow can students learn more about this offering?\nInstagram: @guanaraa \nContact Information\nContact Alina:\n(781) 815-8017 | a.alinkag@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Beginner and Intermediate Tap for All Levels
DESCRIPTION:Classes teach Broadway style tap and focus on repetitive technique to encourage muscle memory and the confidence to create clear sounds. Inclusion is a priority so that all students feel welcome. Classes are “drop-in”\, meaning you may join any week and there’s no “semester” commitment. Past steps are always reviewed with the introduction of 1 or 2 new steps or combos each class. Similar to a yoga class\, students work at their own individual levels and build up skill at their own pace. Beginners will feel comfortable regardless of when they join. \nCost: $20 for 90 minutes \nREGISTER HERE\nPre-registration is encouraged but not required. Drop-ins are welcome. \nAccepted Payments: Cash\, Venmo (@christina-harrington-7) \n\nWhat is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?\nTap dancing began as an answer to the horrors of colonial enslavement…with no musical instruments\, Irish and West African slaves turned to their own feet to create rhythms and percussion while pulling movement and technique from traditional tribal and cultural dances. Sounds were initially made with wooden soles\, then pennies and bottle caps\, finally becoming the modern metal plates screwed to the ball and heel of the shoes. These dances made their way to minstrel and vaudeville shows\, eventually transforming into the broadway and rhythm style tap dancing we know today. \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?\nChristina Harrington joined The Dance Complex as a Teaching Artist in May 2012. As a child she studied tap\, jazz\, and ballet at the Paula Coffey Dance Center in East Bridgewater\, MA from 1987-1995 where tap was always her favorite. From 1996-2001\, she was a member of the dance troupe Orchesis at Elmira College\, and an assistant choreographer for the Elmira College summer theatre program. After several years operating with with KSA Dance in Chelmsford\, Christina formed “Tappin’ With Tina” where classes focus on repetitive technique and prioritize inclusion so that all adult students feel welcome to learn at their own pace\, regardless of experience\, age\, or ability. \nFinish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…\n…Anyone can do it\, it’s incredibly fun\, there are so many styles\, and you can make your own music with your feet! Tap numbers are always showstoppers! \nAccompanists\, Assistants\, and Regular Substitutes:\nJennifer Lee Keeter and Sara Garvin \n\nHow can students learn more about this offering?\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tappinwithtina/ \nContact Information\nContact: Christina Harrington\ncharrington9901@yahoo.com | 617-852-6240

SUMMARY:Capoeira Angola
DESCRIPTION:This class is fun and challenging! We warm up\, practice basic movements\, and then assemble them into a sequence. The sequence is then repeated with a partner\, rotating between different levels. At the end\, we play music and have a small roda to play Capoeira Angola and practice what we have learned. \nCost: $20 Single Class \nNO PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED \nAccepted Payments: Cash\, Check\, Venmo (@David-Fischer-15) \n\nWhat is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?\nCapoeira Angola developed in Brazil from a variety of African roots. N’golo from Angola\, rhythms from Congo\, and acrobatics from Guinea combined to form a martial art disguised as a dance and played like a game. All these elements plus a deliberate sense of fun result in a vigorous workout for the body and mind! \nWhat background\, training\, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?\nMestre Deraldo: I started training Capoeira when I was 14 years old and just turned 64. I saw Capoeira played on the streets\, and was curious to know more. I fell in love with the music\, history\, and movements of the style. I graduated as a Mestre in 1984 and moved to Boston in 1986. I was the first to teach Capoeira in New England. Mestre Joao Pequenho certified me as a teacher of Capoeira Angola in 1991. \nContra Mestre Calango: I moved to Boston in 2000 to continue training with Mestre Deraldo. Since then\, I traveled with him to universities and events around the world to assist in demonstrating and teaching of the beautiful art of Capoeira Angola. I graduated as a Contra Mestre in 2017. \nFinish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…\n…It is so important to promote the history and culture of this amazing style! Capoeira Angola was developed by the enslaved peoples of Brazil to liberate themselves physically and spiritually. It demonstrates the incredible intelligence\, ingenuity\, and strength of the African peoples in the Americas. If those who came before us could use this art to become free while still enslaved\, what can it help us achieve in our own lives? What struggles can Capoeira Angola help us overcome? \n\nContact Information\nContact:\ndfischer1@gmail.com
