“Unkempt” is a love letter to the soft mammal fuzz on our skin, a middle finger to shame and stigma, and a retrospective on why we’ve come to groom how we groom. This dance theatre performance weaves together research and diverse personal stories in order to examine the past and present of body hair practices and expectations through a sociocultural lens. “Unkempt” seeks 3 dancers who feel connected to the subject matter to continue building this work for a performance in mid-May.
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
The dance style of this show blends my experience from contemporary dance, ballroom dance, and physical comedy. As a contemporary dancer, I trained at Boston University and the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and have taken workshops by Pilobolus, Boston Dance Theater, Batsheva, and Vertigo. My ballroom experience comes from a year teaching full-time at an Arthur Murray studio, and my ongoing practice of improv comedy influences my choreography by drawing in comedic elements.
Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…
…everyone should get to find comfort and joy in their own bodies.
