What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
Dancehall is a style of dance, music, and culture from Jamaica. The music began in the 1970s among working class people who weren’t allowed into upscale parties. The style of dance then came into existence in the 1980s. The dance was birthed out of an ongoing need for expression and escape from hardship. The dance itself can be fun, innocent and energetic, but it also can include themes such as sexuality as it is an expression of all aspects of Jamaican culture. |
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

What can students expect from this class?

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…
…dance brings everyone together and it’s an outlet for what may be going on around you. |
