What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
Unfortunately 2-3 sentences is inadequate to articulate the legacy of the style that I teach inclusive of history, cultural and geographic origin, but I do think that if folks are looking for more information about the Horton technique that I base my teachings around, they can use these resources to start: http://www.dancehistoryproject.org/index-of-artists/lester-horton/ & https://www.britannica.com/biography/Lester-Horton |
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
I began my formal training in Modern Dance 24yrs ago during my undergrad at Dean College under the tutelage of Nailah Randall-Bellinger. There I studied Limon, Graham, Dunham, Cunningham and Horton techniques. I continued my training in various programs and have worked with a variety of choreographers and genres post grad. Those experiences influence my comprehension of body mechanics and approach towards conveying information. I decided to attend the Horton Pedagogy program at the Alvin Ailey School and from there have taken a deep dive into my pedagogical approach that is able to reach students no matter where they are in their training. |
Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…
…I have seen the benefits of studying this technique both on and off the stage. It develops a body awareness and strength that allows for a range of expression from novice to professional. |
