What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
Stage combat is the dramatisation of armed or unarmed fights for theater or film/TV wherein performers work with a fight choreographer to tell the story of violence in a way that is safe for everyone involved. The history of staged fight and mock combat can be traced to antiquity, frankly to the origins of the human species and primate display behavior. Examples of stage combat can be found in the Greek stage, Roman amphitheater, tournaments of the Middle Ages, and the Elizabethan era at which time the first ‘fight directors’ emerged. |
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
As someone who trained in multiple martial arts – Muay Thai, Boxing, BJJ and Krav Maga (the last of which I have also taught) – I understand both violence and control and I apply this knowledge to every fight I
have the honor of choreographing onstage. Getting to teach performers how to engage in the art of stage combat with a focus on great storytelling, connection, safety, and control is an honor and a true joy. – Shira Cahn-Lipman.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…
…“I am passionate about teaching this style because I love it. I love the creative process it entails. I love the relationships it creates. I love the moment that I hear an audience gasp when the fight is well executed and the magic of it all unfolds.” – Shira Cahn-Lipman |
