Improv and Movement

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Improvisation, or freestyle, is a form of dance focused on developing movement spontaneously and exploring, understanding, and challenging our own habits and patterns. Inspired by artists such as Galen Hooks and Sean Lew, this improv and movement class will encourage dancers, choreographers, and non-dancers alike to explore new ideas and emotions through dance. Come with an open mind and leave with inspiration, connection to yourself and your movement, and a reminder of why you dance.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

Ria has been dancing for several years, most recently as a company member of Danceworks, choreographer and director of hip hop team Spirit of the Creative, and choreographer for Tufts Burlesque Troupe. Ria has trained in improv, hip hop, heels, jazz funk, and musical theater among other styles, and is an alumna of The Galen Hooks Method.

What can students expect from this class?

An all-levels improv class with a focus on connecting dancers to their love of dance, movement style, and body. The class structure will include across-the-floor work, improvisation prompts and exercises, and a combination focused on exploring and embodying your movement style and personality through the choreography.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

It truly reminds me why I love dance, and leaves me feeling connected to my movement, body, and values. Everyone deserves a judgment-free space dedicated to enjoying movement and remembering why we dance.
