Forsythe Repertoire

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

William Forsythe was director of Ballet Frankfurt from 1984-2004 and in those 20 years radically changed how we look at and can dance ballet. For this specific Forsythe repertoire class, I will be focusing on the more balletic style as opposed to the more modern and contemporary and improvisational works that he is also know for. Specifically, we will be learning steps from the ballet “Artifact” which is in the repertoire of Boston Ballet and will be performed in their upcoming program called “As Anticipated” November 3-16.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

I joined Ballet Frankfurt, under William Forsythe’s direction, in 1985 at the age of 20. During my time in the company, I danced all the major roles at the Ballet Frankfurt for 19 years from 1985-2003. This long and intense collaboration produced most notably the performances: Kammer/Kammer, Eidos Telos, Impressing the Czar and Enemy in the Figure. I not only followed Forsythe’s methods and ideas in how to look at dance, but more importantly in how to perform.

What can students expect from this class?

In this Forsythe repertoire class, we will start with a ballet-based warm-up that incorporates the ideas of describing space from Laban. These ideas are the basis for the steps from his ballet artifact. The class is meant for intermediate to professionals; all levels can expect to discover a very new and unique way to dance. The class will help us to understand how to truly emerge from one’s body.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

…I am passionate about teaching William Forsythe’s work because I have seen how freeing it can be, even inside of a set structure. Of all my jobs, teaching is my favorite.
