What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
Dancehall is a style of dance, music, and culture from Jamaica. The music began in the 1970s among working class people who weren’t allowed into upscale parties. The style of dance then came into existence in the 1980s. The dance was birthed out of an ongoing need for expression and escape from hardship. The dance itself can be fun, innocent and energetic, but it also can include themes such as sexuality as it is an expression of all aspects of Jamaican culture. |
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
I’ve been dancing and studying dancehall for the past 8 years. I’ve lived in Jamaica and travel there regularly so a big part of my learning has happened while I’m in the country and that shows up in how I dance as well. |
What can students expect from this class?
This workshop, while open to all genders, will be focused on what is traditional female dancehall. We will learn a few hit female dancehall moves and combine them into a 1 minute choreography. |
Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…
…it is a style of dance that I fell in love with and I want others to be able to experience the same joy I have when I dance dancehall. |
