What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
Flamenco originated in Southern Spain and in 2010 was designated World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The artistic expression that incorporates song, dance, and musicianship. Deeply connected to the Andalusian and Gitano identities (gypsy), it was transmitted from generation to generation through dynasties of artists, families, flamenco clubs, festivals, schools and flamenco tablaos, that grew all over the world. Currently, Flamenco encompasses a global community that connects Spain, Latin America, United States, Japan and many other cultures. |
What background, training, and/or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
Belén Maya is a flamenco dancer, choreographer and educator. Daughter of two iconic flamenco artists, Carmen Mora and Mario Maya, she started her training from a young age with some of the best in the field, such as Paco Fernández, María Magdalena, Goyo Montero, Rosa Naranjo, Carmen Cortés and Paco Romero. Throughout her career of over three decades, Belén danced on several prestigious flamenco shows around the world, danced with prestigious ensambles and invited by renowned Spanish film director Carlos Saura to represent the new generation of flamenco in his world-renowned film Flamenco. She is considered one of the best dancers in Spain, a symbol of flamenco progress and expression. |

…I really like to dissect movement and explain very clearly where it originates. I don’t want students to imitate me. I don’t like to say “do it the way I do it.” They should understand from where on my body the movement comes so that they can search on their own body from where it should come, because the impulse may come from a different part of their body than mine. |
