Balboa Crash Course with July & Stan

What can students expect from this class?

The crash course is suitable for everyone from beginners to seasoned dancers & will cover the mechanics and fundamental figures of Balboa to get you dancing socially! Class will use an ELEF model: Everyone Leads, Everyone Follows. Though many dancers do choose to specialize in one role, starting out with ELEF helps you understand how both roles work and feel, so you can choose the one that suits you, or choose to keep dancing in both! No partner is necessary, as we will rotate partners in class.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Balboa is a style of partnered swing dancing that developed in the 1920s and ’30s in Southern California. Its original dancers were multicultural, and the music and movements arose from African-American culture.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

Boston Balboa’s founders, July Belber and Stan Yen, have danced Balboa for 20 years, and have been teaching for more than 10.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

we love the connection aspects of the dance — between the lead and follow and between the dancers and the music — we play with improvisation and share the joy of the dance with each new partner!
