What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Bharatanatyam is a classical Indian form of dancing. It has its origins from an ancient text called the Naṭyasastra, which is thousands of years old. Bharatanatyam has been adapted and has changed over the last few hundreds of years into a very linear and sharp form.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

I have been training in Bharatanatyam since I was 5/6 years old. I started with Guru Narmada Rao, and later I studied with Guru Sundari Santhanam, Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and Dr. Gayatri Kannan. The form that I teach is an amalgam of my teachers’ various techniques and their methodologies.

My teaching style is called the Raadha Kalpa method. I have a dance company called the Raadha Kalpa method as well. I have a specific interest in how I can create an efficient mover with aesthetic alignment that feels effortless. The method also tries to cultivate an imagination that comes from the performer’s internal projection as he/she is performing.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

I am passionate about teaching because it’s a form that challenges you, and I love watching others do Bharatanatyam well.
