What can students expect from this class?
This class is open to all levels and generations! Each class will involve a warmup and learning of a full dance. We will share what we have learned by dancing across the floor toward the live drummers! This class is more importantly about letting go, having fun, and celebrating with community! |

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
This class taps into the movement legacy of West African dance, specifically from Mali. To honor the traditional nature of Mali’s dance and music culture, this class also features live Djembe and DunDun accompaniment. |
What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
SEYDOU COULIBALY is one of Mali’s leading dancers, teachers, and choreographers. He was named Mali’s #1 dancer in the final Biennale arts competition before the coup d’état in 1990. He then founded and was artistic director of Mali’s nationally respected and award-winning Troupe Komée Josée, which toured throughout Mali. Seydou also runs Centre Yeredon (Yeredon Center), founded in 2001. Yeredon is a nationally recognized cross-cultural arts center, and school in Bamako, Mali, which aims to bring a greater knowledge of Malian culture to foreigners while preserving the work of Mali’s most talented artists. |
