Studio Rental

The Dance Complex has six studios of varying sizes which can be rented for rehearsals, private lessons, auditions, photo & video shoots, workshops / master classes, performances, events, and weekly classes (in dance and related movement arts - waiting list may apply, see below). Prices and booking instructions are listed below. Facility descriptions and studio dimensions are listed at bottom of page. Rehearsal requests are not taken via email, please see instructions listed under Rehearsals section.

Auditions

In order to book an audition it is mandatory that you contact the Scheduling Coordinator at contracts@dancecomplex.org or 617-547-9363 x12. Auditions require a contract and security deposit of $50. Audition fees for participants are prohibited. Cancellations require 48-hour notice or entire rent is due. Sound systems or portable stereos (first come first serve basis) are available. All systems are iPod/MP3 compatible - you MUST bring your own CABLE.

  • Before 6pm: $18.00 / hour
  • After 6pm: $25.00 / hour
  • Non-Dance Auditions (theater, modeling/fashion shows, etc.): $18.00 / hour before 6pm, $25.00 / hour after 6pm, $18.00/hr weekends

Performances / Events

Dance Performances

Performances require a contract; in order to book the theatre for a performance it is mandatory that you contact the Scheduling Coordinator at contracts@dancecomplex.org or 617-547-9363 x12. A cleaning / security deposit of $100 is due when the space is booked. One half the total rent is due three weeks prior to show date. Cancellation requires three-weeks' notice or entire rent is due. The Dance Complex does not provide house, stage, or technical crew, however, references are available. A Dance Complex liaison is required to attend each performance. Audience capacity is approximately 90 seats, additional 10 (+/-) persons on the floor w/ mats. Street shoes are not allowed on the theater floor. Alcohol, open flames, and the sale of anything are prohibited. Theatre facility description and dimensions are at the bottom of the page.Please note: Our prices have changed as of May 20, 2009.

  • Use of Theatre per night: $190.00
  • Use of stage lights/sound board: add $125.00
  • 8 hours rehearsal / tech time: add $65.00
  • Dance Complex liaison fee: $30.00 each performance (mandatory).
  • One performance, lights, and 8 hours of rehearsal: $410.00
  • Two performances, lights, and 8 hours of rehearsal: $630.00
  • Three performances, lights, and 8 hours of rehearsal: $850.00
  • Additional performances after three evenings: add $220.00 each
  • Security Deposit: $100.00.

 

Non-Dance Performances (theater, music, poetry, etc.)

Add $100 to dance performance rates. In order to book the theatre for a perfromance it is mandatory that you contact the Scheduling Coordinator at contracts@dancecomplex.org or 617-547-9363 x12. Street shoes are not allowed on any dance floor.

 

Non-Arts-Related Events

Events require a contract; in order to book space for an event it is mandatory that you contact the Scheduling Coordinator at contracts@dancecomplex.org or 617-547-9363 x12. A cleaning/security deposit of $100.00, and one half of the total rent, are due when the space is booked. The Dance Complex does not provide house or event crew. Street shoes are not allowed on any dance floor. Alcohol, open flames, and the sale of anything are prohibited.

  • One evening (6pm-midnight): $565.00, each additional hour is $125.00
  • Security Deposit: $100.00.

Photo & Video Shoots

The studio rental fees for a photo or video shoot are greater than our normal rehearsal/private lesson rates and vary depending on usage and equipment. It is possible to rent the theater (black box) with use of the stage lights for a video shoot with the approval of the theater manager (studio rent is dependant on usage, $125 flat rate fee applies for use of the lights and/or sound equipment for two hours, $75 each additional hour).Sound systems or portable stereos (first come first serve basis) are available. All systems are iPod/MP3 compatible - you MUST bring your own CABLE.

Private Lessons / Instruction

Private lessons are defined as instruction for groups of six students or less for which the teacher receives compensation. The Dance Complex does not provide instructors, however we can arrange for the rental of studio space. Please contact teachers directly to arrange for instruction; visit our Class Descriptions Page to search for instructors by dance style and view contact information. Cancellation requires 24 hours' notice, or else payment is due. Please call 617-547-9363 to place a request for studio rental for a private lesson with the receptionist (leave messages on extension 10). Please note that we do not take requests for private lesson studio space via email. Sound systems or portable stereos (first come first serve basis) are available. All systems are iPod/MP3 compatible - you MUST bring your own CABLE.

  • Anytime: $16.00 / hour

In order to book studio space for private instruction for groups of more than 6 students it is mandatory that you contact the Scheduling Coordinator at contracts@dancecomplex.org or 617-547-9363 x12.

Rehearsals

Dance Rehearsals

The rates below are for DANCE REHEARSALS ONLY. Private lessons have separate rates. Workshops/master classes and auditions have separate rates and require a contract with security deposit.. Cancellation requires 24 hours' notice, or else payment is due. Please call 617-547-9363 to place a rehearsal request with the receptionist (leave messages on x10), a DC staff member will call back to confirm the request within 48 hours. You may also place a request in person at the front desk. Rehearsal requests can be made up to one month in advance. Payment is expected at time of rental. Please note that we do not take rehearsal requests via email. Sound systems or portable stereos (first come first serve basis) are available. All systems are iPod/MP3 compatible - you MUST bring your own CABLE.

  • Weekdays before 6pm: $8.00 / hour
  • Weekdays after 6pm: $15.00 / hour
  • Weekends: $9.00 / hour

Non-Dance Rehearsals (ie. theater, modeling/fashion shows, etc.)

In order to arrange for studio space for theatrical rehearsals or for another non-dance related use (modeling, fashion shows, etc.), it is mandatory that you contact the Scheduling Coordinator at contracts@dancecomplex.org or 617-547-9363 x12. Please note that the Dance Complex does NOT rent studio space for music or voice rehearsals. Sound systems or portable stereos (first come first serve basis) are available. All systems are iPod/MP3 compatible - you MUST bring your own CABLE.

  • Before 6pm: $18.00 / hour
  • After 6pm & weekends: $25.00 / hour

Dance Rehearsal Contracts

Rehearsal contracts are available for dance rehearsals lasting longer than two months. Contracted rehearsals can be scheduled Monday- Friday before 6pm ONLY; it is not possible to have contracted rehearsal space during the weekday evenings or on the weekends. Weekly Classes

Permanent weekly class rentals require an application process (resume submission & evaluation); there is a two-year (approx.) waiting list for permanent class time slots. These slots are reserved for classes in dance and movement-related arts. A contract and $50.00 security deposit are required. Cancellation requires two weeks' notice, or else payment is due. Although the Dance Complex has an extensive waiting list for regular weekly classes, workshop series are available - see below. Instructors who would like to be considered for a weekly class, placed on the class waiting list, or information about workshop series availability should contact the Scheduling Coordinator at contracts@dancecomplex.org, call 617-547-9363 x12, or mail a resume, bio, and class/workshop proposal (including schedule requirements) to The Dance Complex, 536 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, MA 02139, Attn: Scheduling Coordinator.

  • Kids' classes: $15.00 / hour
  • Adult dance classes: $28.00 / hour, $42.00 / 1.5 hours, $56.00 / 2 hours, etc.

Workshops / Master Classes

  • Weekends up to 4 hours long: $35.00 / hour

  • Weekends 4 hours or more: $30.00 / hour

Non-Dance Workshops

Non-dance workshops may include classes in theater, healing arts/meditation, modeling, writting, etc. Studio availability for non-dance workshops may be limited by studio requirements or other considerations. Please note that the Dance Complex does NOT book workshops solely dedicated to music or vocal studies. Workshops/master classes require a contract and security deposit. Cancellation requires two-weeks' notice or entire rent is due. Studio Facilities Description


STREET SHOES ARE NEVER ALLOWED IN ANY STUDIO, AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY SPACE RENTAL.

  • Studio #1: 1320 sq. ft., Floor space: 41' x 32' STUDIO/THEATRE (Julie Ince Thompson Theatre). Wood Floor with Marley, NO SHOES (slippers ok). Full stereo system installed. Piano available.
  • Studio #2: 1312 sq. ft., Floor space: 48' x 27.5' Wood floor, shoes (Ballroom, Jazz, Ballet, Hip-Hop shoes only, NO Tap or Flamenco shoes allowed). Full stereo system installed. Piano available.
  • Studio #3: 1881 sq. ft., Floor space: 49.5' x 30' Marley floor, shoes (Ballroom, Jazz, Ballet, Hip-Hop shoes only, NO Tap or Flamenco shoes allowed). Full stereo system installed. Piano available.
  • Studio #4: 558 sq. ft., Floor space 31' x 18' Wood floor, shoes (all, Tap and Flamenco are okay). Full stereo system installed.
  • Studio #5: 640 sq. ft., Floor space: 32' x 20' Wood floor, shoes (all, Tap and Flamenco are okay). Full stereo system installed.
  • Studio #6: 1739 sq. ft., Floor space: 47' x 37' Tap Marley floor, shoes (all, Tap and Flamenco are okay). Full stereo system installed. Piano available.
  • THEATRE (Julie Ince Thompson Theatre): STAGE- Depth: 25ft., Width: 35ft., Wood floor with Marley (can be installed/removed for performances for a fee), Riser Seats: approximately 90 (+10 extra with mats on the floor), Theatre Audience Capacity: 110 persons, per order of the Cambridge Fire Dept. Piano available.

Barres, mirrors, and restrooms with lockers and showers are available. Sound systems or portable stereos (first come first serve basis) are available. All systems are iPod/MP3 compatible - you MUST bring your own CABLE. Bringing your own portable stereo is recommended, especially for teachers.
