Contact: www.rebeccaricedance.com

Join choreographer Rebecca Rice Tuesday and Thursday mornings for a class that explores movement from both the ballet and classical modern idioms. Ballet barre will be standard as well as attention to movement that builds both virtuosity of technique and creative self-expression.

Rebecca's dance classes focus on developing technical, theatrical performers and build strong, musical and organic movers. They seek to develop a dance artist’s sensibility, creativity, precision, and strength using techniques from Ballet, Bill Evans/ Limon-based modern, Laban, Effort Shape as well as various Pilates and Zena Rommets floor work. Ballet barre, classical and contemporary movement as well as new choreographic ideas will be part of every class. Attention to working with challenging rhythms in order to build strong musicality will be stressed.

QUOTE: "Rebecca Rice has forged a movement lexicon that fuses ballet and modern dance in a way that seems totally organic, comfortably familiar yet not routine. The foundation in traditional ballet is impeccably clear, yet her work is grounded in the weighted earthiness and gestural richness of modern dance."

Wearing rows of small, brass bells on each ankle, the dancer alternates between recitation, footwork, fixed compositions, improvisation and story telling. In these classes, we focus on three aspects of the dance: Nritta (pure dance, technique) - includes movement exercises, basic tatkar (footwork), chakkars (turns), rhythmic patterns and timing, and recitation of the bols (language of the dance). Nritya (dance with rhythm and expression) - use of interpretive gestures, expression, and rendering of traditional songs and poems. Kathak is a highly sophisticated classical performing art characterized by intricate footwork, expressive movement of the hands and face, rhythmic intensity, swift turns and elegant stances. Natya (drama) - learning the art of storytelling, the nava rasa (nine sentiments), working with ardhanariswara-shiva/shakti (masculine/feminine energies).

Clothing: Wear clothes that allow freedom of movement: salwar/kurta outfits, short-sleeves or long sleeves (rather than sleeveless) tops, skirt with leggings or tights underneath, sweat pants with a tunic/long shirt covering the hips, leotard, or t-shirt. Hair needs to be pinned or tied back so it does not cover the face or become distracting while dancing. Kathak is danced with the feet bare and so it is customary to keep feet and the floor as clean as possible.
