is closest in structure to tango, but its movement aesthetics
are deeply informed by many forms of Brazilian samba. The class

and frequent partner changes will be encouraged.

Description: The
"game" of Capoeira Angola is named for the country
credited with its origin, and it is closely connected to,
respects, and honors its African past. It weaves intricate
movements, spirituality, mental and physical discipline, fight,
play, strategy, and philosophy into a rhythmic game of real
or ritual combat. It is played slowly and deliberately, but
with humor and joyfulness. The end result is spontaneous,
un-choreographed, and is a physical "conversation"
between players. Students will learn the fluid, dance-like
movements that allow them to improvise in the roda,
and learn how to sing & play the accompanying rhythmic
instruments.
Clothing: T-shirt

24th, is the next MOVEMENT IMPROV. JAM with LIVE MUSIC
at the Dance Complex. The collaborating musician Monday, March
24th is John Sprague (multi-instrumentalist, composer): John
Sprague is an award-winning multi-instrumental musician and
recording artist who has worked with dancers for almost twenty
years. He is also involved with contemplative practice and creates
music and teaches workshops supporting contemplative awareness.
He works as a staff musician for the Five College Dance Department,
Amherst MA, and also teaches and plays music frequently at Dance
New England events and other regional movement venues, such
as Earthdance.John has released four albums of original music,
one of which won awards in the "original instrumental music"
category from JPFolks, a large independent music organization.
John also works as a teacher and support person for home-schooling
teenagers, and mentored his own son, Miro, who at 21 is now
a nationally recognized jazz pianist and composer.

Description:
"A Time Upon Once" - This open level class is a follow
up to the previous fundamentals series, and welcomes new and
experienced dancers/CI practitioners. Equipped with beginner's
mind, we continue to introduce various parts of the body to
momentum and the forces of gravity. We explore weight in motion,
equilibrium and disorientation using direct actions: spiraling,
counterbalancing, lifting, taking flight... We expand our notion
of contact and of improvisation with further investigations
of space and composition. With our partner, we let go of physical
expectations, create a common language ... and each "time
upon once" end up sharing the dance, through art and play.
Clothing: Bare feet,

Kieran Jordan, has recently returned from a MA in Dance Performance
program at University of Limerick, Ireland.In this introductory
course, students will learn the basic positions and step patterns
of Irish soft-shoe and hard-shoe dancing. Each class will include
a full-body warm-up, a vigorous cardio/dance section, and a
gentle cool-down. Students will learn to dance lively jigs and
reels in a spirited, non-competitive environment. Open to students
ages 14 and up. No previous experience is required. Please wear

With her eclectic blend of modern dance techniques and humor,
Kraus is gearing this class to novice, rusty, and recalcitrant
dancers.

dance that is fun, challenging, engaging, illuminating, mind-boggling,
and additive free. Taught by award winning choreographer Rozann
Kraus.
Clothing: Loose and
comfortable; leotard and tights; barefoot. STREET SHOES ARE
NOT ALLOWED IN ANY STUDIO AT ANY TIME.

Description: The
classes are all workshop format (workshop times are from 10-14
weeks, generally). Students may join at anytime. It is possible
to catch up even when joining mid-workshop since notation and
music are available. (Notation is free.) Also the atmospheres
of the classes are friendly and non-competitive, making the
new comer feel welcome. A single class can be taken at any time,
after which time students need to commit to the workshop ($12/class
when taken as a workshop w/make-up classes, pro-rating, and
payment plans available).
Clothing: Comfortable
exercise-type clothing, pants short enough to see ankles (or
rolled up). Tap shoes are not required for the first class or
two (wear shoes in which you can stand on the ball of your feet).
