West African Dance

offers a rich cultural heritage in the arts that has long been traditional sources of self-knowledge, community cohesion and spiritual communion. Come learn traditional dances, rhythms and songs from Senegal and Guinea, West Africa and at the same time explore the functions of these dances in relationship to your own life. Class warm-up informs African dance technique and includes working on core strength, stretch, stamina, grounding, community building and rhythmic sensibility. Live Drumming

Rainbowdance: Primary Rainbowdance is offered to children aged 1.5 - 3 years and a caregiver. A structured sequence of sound and gesture integrated movement activities encourage secure attachment to the caregiver and to the peer group, while providing a soothing and energizing first experience with peers. Through the language of the body children learn to discriminate safe and positive facial cues and physical territory exploring music, soft props and story.

Rainbowdance Preschool is the developmental sequel for children aged 3-5 years. The focus in the program is upon exploring the many dynamics of peer relationships. Children dance the sequences of the Primary program but are challenged toward competency as they embody stories whose themes are appropriate to healthy social development. Focus is placed upon reciprocity and the place of the child in the natural world.

Modern/Jazz fuses various dance styles from funk to ballet. After basic jazz and modern-style warm-up exercises, students learn to express their creative selves while concentrating on having fun and building strength, rhythm, and lyricism.

Students learn proficiency at the barre and continue with complicated center work. Emphasis on musicality and precision of movement continue as we concentrate on combining knowledge of ballet steps into fluid dance combinations. Students who are ready may be working on pointe. This class is for students who have taken 2-3 years of continuous ballet instruction.

Beginning Tap (Ages 6+)

Tap is an exciting form of dance in which dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats. In a relaxed, encouraging and energetic environment, students will learn single tap steps, then incorporate them into series of combinations. Emphasis will be on producing clean tap sounds with each step. A few of the basic tap steps include the brush, flap, shuffle, and ball change.
